Question: Speedometer, Mileagemeter, Gas gage fluctuation, console
The Question below is in reference to the 4 door LXI version with all the bells and whistles. Not the 2 door convertable smaller engine one, if it makes a difference. Thanks.

I just fixed a similar problem with my 97 JX convertible. I also had this problem with my 96 Impala SS, so it appears to be common with fluorescent odometers. The odometer and tachometer would work intermittently. When it was not working, the speedometer needle would flutuate and the gas gauge would not work correctly (went to empty when there was still 6 gallons in the tank).
Take out the instrument cluster by removing the bezel and then the 4 screws. There are two plugs to remove from the back. Once out, remove the circuit board on the backside by removing the screws and pulling out. There is some resistance in pulling due to the push in connectors for the instruments. Be careful not to break the circuit board. There are 3 resistors (tube shaped, blue) that are grouped together and the board will probably look dark (burnt) around them. They are located in the lower center of the board. Resolder the backside connections on these resistors, using flux and a high temperature solder iron, made for electronics (sold at Radio Shack). Do not use a solder gun, as that will destroy the circuit board.
