Question: what's the life expectancy of an ac compressor?

had a new ac unit installed 3 years ago on my S10 4cyl...took it in to get the ac charged...the mechanic says the compressor is bad....what is the average life of a compressor? shouldn't it last more than 3 years???

HELP! Don't trust this mechanic....
