RideStyle

I bought a '13 base model *manual* soul in the end of November. Driving city style I've been getting an average MPG of 30-32 whereas on the highway I'm getting an average of 36 (highest was 38, but I'm thinking that was a bit high and maybe a little inaccurate). It's a perfect fit for me - it doesn't sit right on the ground like a lot of compact cars do (I gave up a 04 Grand Cherokee, so going to a car was a bit concerning to me since most feel like they sit on the ground to me) and the amount of space in the back seat and cargo area is perfect. The gear ratio feels short to me (you'll be shifting a lot if you're in an urban area like I am), but I absolutely love this car... which I never thought I'd ever say about any Kia. Keep in mind it's mostly a plastic vehicle and doesn't come with a spare tire (I've picked up a kit that fits in the indentation in the hatch/trunk perfectly). The "privacy" windows in the back between the cargo area and the back seats are kind of a joke - you can't see them from the driver's seat, but a cheap set of spot mirrors from any autoparts store fixes the blind spots for a few bucks. For the little 1.6l in this car I was actually a bit surprised by what it can handle (the 2l has a bit more pep - I test drove that in an auto & manual... it thought it was a racecar). If anyone's looking at this vehicle that has a fuller bottom/hips: make sure you really sit in it before you pick one up; I'm a heavier/hippy kind of gal and the buckle can take a little adjusting to find a place where it's not digging into my hip. I've put about 3k on it since the end of November and really, truly enjoy driving this car.

Car Brakes: How Do You Know When to Change Them?

By Zach Bowman For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
