I had a 1996 Jetta that I traded in for the 2003 Jetta. This newer model is quick and speedy with outstanding gas mileage. While driving, there are times that I look down and realize that I'm about to break the sound barrier and have to slow down. I get about 30-35 mpg driving within the city.
I will admit that we have had some problems with my beloved automobile. The "check engine light" came on because of a manufacture problem with the catalytic converter. VW is supposed to reimburse us for our repairs (and I'm still waiting on that check). I've also had the brake lights go out because of a manufacture defective part that VW fixed for free.
The only other problem that I've had with the car is really more of a personal annoyance than anything. The built-in "hideable cupholder" sucks. The arms have worn out where they barely hold the cup, and it's positioned over the radio. This causes problems when you want to change CDs, radio stations, etc. Plus, if your cup sweats, it either drips on the radio, or down into the ash tray. This was a good idea/bad design for a cup holder.
As for everything else about the car, it has always been reliable and has ran great. I will probably own another jetta when this one is ready to retire.

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice th ...
