2002 Passat 1.8 Turbo SW 
OVERALL

This car rides smooth and comfortable. Normal maintenance for this is:
1. Valve cover gaskets - leaks into spark plugs
2. Coolant Temp sensor - replace
3. Belts - replace
4. Axle - replace

If you change oil (Mobil 1) & flters every 5500 miles you should be good.

Rotate tires every 8k miles. ....

I've had this car since new, and I've kept up with maintenance. Not counting normal consumables, here is what has failed in the first 124,000 miles:

Leaking sunroof (one month repair under warranty)
ECT sensor (under warranty)
Heater core - big $$
Heater core - AGAIN!!!
Left passenger door lock
