Q: Service light?

Does the service light come on automatically at pre-set intervals? I have my Prius serviced between 3-5k miles. My son borrowed the car before it hit 15k;he said the service light blinked intermittently, and once it rolled over to 15k, stayed on.Is this normal? My garage is closed over the holiday weekend, so I'll be a wreck until Tuesday.
