Mechanic Q: gas gauge not reading properly?

My gas gauge on the dash is not working properly. when i start the car it always says full then it says full when i drive. If i stop at a light or anyplace for longer then 2 minutes it will go directly to empty. Thankfully I keep track of miles so I know I don't need to fill up until i drive 340 miles. (I usually fill up at 315 miles though)
