Mechanic Q: How do I stop leak around thermostate housing?

After replaced the thermostat housing I had a slow leak (a gallon in two months), I replaced the O ring and the leak worsened. Any help would be appreciated.

My application does not have a gasket, just a rubber O ring, and the Haynes manual doesn't say anything about sealant. The original O ring had a sticky grease on it, but I thought that was just to hold it in place. Could that have been a special grease?
