Mechanic Q: Battery Disconnect - Theft Deterrent?

My CD player is giving me an error code E3 which my Lexus dealer says often means a new CD player is needed. I read on line that before you replace the CD player, you should disconnect a battery terminal which would have the same affect as booting a computer and then see if the CD works. I am afraid to do that since I am not sure if the radio will work if I disconnect the battery and I don't have a code (just bought this 4 year old car and don't see a code with it)
