Mechanic Q: timing belt change?

when do i really,really have to do a timing belt change??-dont tell me 60,000 miles-when will it probably break??

i have my junkyard engine lined up, and a mechanic to change it out--see-my local dealers and ind garage both want $3,000.00 -i cant afford that!!!!
