Mechanic Q: is there a sequence to follow after replacing ign. key and resistor?

i lost the resistor in my key. i went to gm and got a new key and resistor for the ignition.but the ignition turns on but won't crank still

Q: is there a proper procedure to follow when replacing key and resistor in 98 buick regal?

lost resistor in key. went to gm. got new key and resistor for car but it still turns on the ignition and everthing lights up but it won't crank over
