Question: 1995 Ford Taurus 3.0 overheating

I just bought a 95 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 with 93,000 miles in great shape for my son as his first car (too good a deal to pass up). The motor and tranny sound great, but the car has started to overheat. At first, I didn't notice if the electric cooling fan worked. So to begin, I've flushed the cooling system, refilled with coolant; changed the thermostat from a 197 to 160 (I live in south Florida where it's always HOT - I've done this before on other cars and never a problem), replaced a heater hose that had a small pinhole, now all hoses are good - coolant level is always fine; changed the coolant temperature sensor and radiator cap. I then started the car (cold) and turned the a/c on and the fan started working. The temp gauge stayed between N and R in NORMAL on the gauge for about 2 days and idling a long time. I thought problem was solved. A couple days later the car began overheating again. The temp gauge goes passed the L, and when I shut the car off I can hear it boiling in the coolant overflow (so the temp gauge seems to be accurate). Prior to turning the car off while the gauge was near or passed L in NORMAL, I noticed the fan was NOT clicking on. I turned on a/c and fan still did not turn on, although it did a few days prior. I bought a PowerProbe to run some sensor/relay tests but have never used it before. Any ideas out there? Did I miss something? Any help is much appreciated!! --- Gabe

But you may want to have it checked for a blown head gasket.

Thanks for the reply! I found out what was happening. When I first flushed the system, I checked the fan by pushing the blades manually (battery disconnected) to see if it would rotate freely. I noticed that it was somewhat stiff, but slowly loosened up. I thought it was normal to feel that way. I guess that got it working for a couple days, but then it seized up again - which led to the overheating again. So, I managed to replace the electric radiator cooling fan motor. I let it warm up with A/C off and heard the fan cycle and bring the temp down, then shut off. I also turned the A/C on and the fan started simultaneously, so it's getting the proper commands from the car computer. I have driven the car repeatedly in hot weather now and it's running cool and great!
