Question: 1996 Toyota Camry Broke Down..

I have a 1996 Toyota Camry, this car just hit 200,000 miles I have never had to put hardly any work into it. Yesterday, it started to make a terrible grinding noise as I pulled out of a gas station onto a side street. (Almost like something fell off and was just scraping under my car) So I went to put it in park and let go of the brake, and it just started to roll back words, IN PARK. So I got it to a safe spot. But when I switch it into different gears it makes a terrible grinding noise, and it won't go anywhere. The tow driver told me it's because I broke my axle. It seems like it would be transmission to me.. Any ideas on what this could be!?
