Question: After adding coolant, temperature sensor comes on and chimes - do I need more coolant?

My temperature sensor light came on this morning and then the alarm chimed. I was able to get to a gas station and was advised to put coolant in. I did this and drove a short distance to work. Should also mention the heat has stopped working -the day before.
Driving home after 15 minutes the alarm started chiming again. Did I not put enough coolant in? Does it take awhile to run through? Is the heat issue as a result of possibly running out of coolant? This is the first time this has happened. Thank you

You have a coolant leak. You need to find and fix the leak before your engine stops running. When the warning light comes on most of the time it means new head gasket. But I hope that is not the case for you. So take it to a shop and have them fix the coolant leak.

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
