Question: Alignment?

I was in Sears tonight for a tire repair and they said they checked my alignment and the car needed an alignment. They provided a computer printout documenting said need. Not knowing how to evaluate the legitimacy of this "advice" (valid recommendation vs money-making scam) I deferred on the aligment.

Tires were put on about a year ago (about 9,000mi) and car was aligned then. Any way to independently evaluate their claim?

Thanks so much.

The only way to see if you need an alignment is to put the car on an alignment machine and do a quick check. normally most shops don't do that for a tire repair.

What I will say is unless you have abnormal tire wear, worn suspension or pulling when driving you .probably are fine without one. You could take it back to the shop who installed the tires, they may do a check for you for free since it was only 9K miles ago.

Thanks so much, Ron. I'll have my regular mechanic check it out for me when I go in for inspection. At this time, there's no discernible abnormal tire wear and certainly no pulling when driving.

Again, many thanks!

Jane

Car Brakes: How Do You Know When to Change Them?

By Zach Bowman For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
