Question: Brakes grind and steering wheel shakes

On a 2011 Dodge Journey the brakes make a terrible grinding noise when applied and at about 50mph or more when the brakes are applied the steering wheel shakes violently. I have taken it to the local Dodge dealership and they say that this is normal and that there is no issues with the brakes. The issue started around 20000 miles and is currently at 24000 miles. Can you tell me if this is normal behavior and/or what I need to do to remedy this issue if it is not normal. Thanks
