Question: can not getting the oil changed cause smoke from the exhaust and smell of burning?

i bought my car about 6 months ago and i never got the oil changed. I recently started having problems with my car. There is alot of smoke coming from the exhaust and it smells like something is burning. Could this be from not changing the oil?
