Question: car revs when switching gears

I drive a 2006 Mazda3. Upon shifting to a higher gear the engine revs as if i pressed the accelerator while the car was in neutral. It will do this in all gears except first and becomes more apparent as I move my way up to 5th gear. Also, the car stutters/shakes when changing to the higher gears (sometimes 3rd and up) this reminds me of how a manual acts when you shift too early. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First, eliminate a problem with the idle speed. What rpm does it idle at, when cold and warm? If you rev it up (about 3000 rpms, when you're out of gear), what rpm does it return to? If it is not going below 1000 rpms, clean the IAC (idle air control) valve and throttle body.
