Question: car wont stay running

my son was driving the car and it died.i checked it out found the fuel pump not working,replaced it and now the car starts but if you touch the accelerator it backfires and dies...let it set a min and it starts right back up but again touch the accelerator it backfires and dies...what could be the problem?
