Question: catalytic converter

I've always used premium fuel (as recommended), but have been told that Giant Eagle's Get Go gas is inferior & can cause catalytic converter failure.
If this is true, what would be the approximate cost of that part (not counting labor)? Their comment was based on a "lean" smell to the exhaust. Is there a hook up spot to get a computer diagnosis code?

the fuel probably won't damage your Cat. An overly rich or lean condition over time could. A shop can do a few simple tests to tell you if the Cat is bad or not.

Most 1980 to 1995 GM vehicles have a diagnostic connector under the dash that can hoo up to most OBDI scan tools. The current OBDII scantools are not compatible unless you have one that has an adapter to fit the earlier cars.

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
