Question: Check Engine function

My car is running very badly. But my check engine light has not turned on to alert of a problem, but theres is something wrong with my car. I had my car repaired over 3 years ago when the light came on. I paid the mechanic to reset, and turn the light off. My question is: Is it possible the mechanic disabled my computer, making it so my light wold not come on if there is a problem?

Probably not.

A quick check to see if the light works is to begin with the car off. Turn the key to the on position. The light should come on. When you start the car, the light should go off within 10 seconds. If it does that, the bulb is good and the computer is doing its self test.

As to the poor running, there are many things that can make it run badly without turning on the light.

For all hard starting or engine performance issues, you should always start with the basics. Make sure the tune up items are done and check the charging and starting systems. The engine must have the basics done in order for it to be able to run correctly. Many things can cause this type of problem, and the simplest sometimes get overlooked.

Car Brakes: How Do You Know When to Change Them?

By Zach Bowman For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
