Question: check engine is on

PO 440....what i need to do

February 10, 2010, 8:13 pm

David S

P0440 is a Large leak in the Evaporation Emission system (which basically vents the gas vapors in the tank back into the engine where they are burnt).

The #1 most common cause for this code setting is when the car is driven with the gas cap off or not fully tightened.

Try removing you gas cap and make sure the rubber gasket looks OK. Then put it on and tighten it, following the instructions on the cap. Clear the Check Engine light and drive it for a while an see if the light comes back on.

Chances are it wont, but if it does then that means the is a leak somewhere in the evap system.
