Question: Do airbag sensors just go out

Got into a accident in dec 11 but airbags never deployed becaues accident wasnt that bad.Had bumper replaced in jan and around march my airbag impact sensor went out. It's a 220 dollar fix . Shouldn't that repair fall on the repair shop that fixed my car since it was never an issue before?
