Question: Do I need a whole new transmission?

The car cranks and starts up just fine but when I put it in reverse or drive it's just makes this loud noise. I had a mechanic come look at it and he told me it was the transmission because it went forward when I put it in reverse then another mechanic told me it might not be the whole transmission probably just a part. I really don't know but it makes a loud noise when I put it in reverse or drive and hit the gas.

Lots of things can cause abnormal shifting. You'll have to have a transmission shop diagnose whether it's in the transmission itself, or if the transmission is reacting to a sensor giving it poor data.

If it is making noise though, the transmission is probably damaged internally.

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
