Question: do i need synthetic oil

i have a 1997 vw golf gti 2.0 i was told i need sunthetic oil only is this true

Check your owner's manual. If synthetic is required, it will be listed in the manual. I doubt any 1997 vehicles required synthetic. I've never seen one anyway.
