Question: Driver's side U-Bolt

I barely drive my vehicle and it passed NYS inspection today along with an LOF. However the mechanic said "the rubber boot to the driver's side U-bolt is starting to erode" and wants to replace it for $215.00 plus tax. I think they are taking advantage of the fact they couldn't nail me for anything on the inspection. What say you?

I think you are referring to a CV Joint boot.

And if it is cracked or torn, you should repair it immediately as waiting can cause damage to the CV (constant velocity) joint which would require replacing the whole axle.

Sounds like the mechanic did a good inspection and is recommending preventative maintenance to you.
