Question: drums and rotors

How often do the brake drums and rotors need to be replaced?

Only when they are worn, warped or heat damaged. If the drums wear they become oversized and are too big to work properly. rotors are the exact opposite, they become undersized and can't dissipate heat properly.

Usually if the brakes are not down to metal on metal, both rotors and drums can be turned at least once (sometimes twice) during a brake job before they need replacement.
