Question: Engine chips

I have a 2008 Pontiac G6 GT with a 3.5 litre engine. I was wondering if adding an engine chip to the motor would cause any damage to the motor (short and long term )?

It should not cause the engine to have damage. But it will make the cat converter go out faster. Also fuel mileage will do down.
