Question: Ford Escort Wagon - Rear door won't open

Is it possible to open the rear door (hatchback) from the inside and if so, how? The exterior latch just broke today and I can't open it now. Yes, it is unlocked.

Elizabeth,

Larry's solution didn't work for, perhaps beacause his answer was for a 1995 Escort wagon and not a 1997. First the lock is not involved so a locksmith would be of no help unless they can jimmy the latch. Second, I was able to remove five plastic popup/pushin pins, but it still would not let me remove the lower panel under the hatchback. Do you have other ideas for accessing the hatchback latch from inside the car or from the exterior?

thanks,
Chad Martin

I have not run across this problem before, and don't have an Escort in front of me to look at, so my ability to help you is limited. But I have 2 suggestions:
1) If there is another release mechanism, it will be in your owner's manual. If you don't have yours, your can download one from the Ford website or try to buy one online at eBay.
2) Check a dedicated Escort forum, like this one: http://www.feoa.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=search&mode=results

Hope that helps.

Thanks Elizabeth,

I found two more popup pins that was preventing the lower panel from coming out. They are really hard to see and without a manual I didn't know how many there were. Once I got the last two popup pins out I was able to peel back the vapor barrier and see that a plastic piece of the latch inside the door was broken.

chad martin

Car Brakes: How Do You Know When to Change Them?

By Zach Bowman, DriverSide Contributor For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice th ...
