Question: High-pitched whining noise from engine

I just had the car die on me in the middle of an intersection. All of a sudden the engine started making a high-pitched whining sound and boht the red lights that are outlines of an oil can and the batter came on and the car just died. I was able to put it in park, restart it and drive it 2 blocks to a parking lot. I checked the oil, it wasn't full but it wasn't dry, about half way.

That could be the alternator going out. The alternator could have locked up causing noise and the engine to die.
