Question: how can i make sure work was done

i took my car in for winter check, by the time all the so called repairs, the bill was 5.500.00i want to make sure it was neede and also was done. im a widow with no auto repairs experence/

Best thing to do is ask to see the old parts. In California they are required to save them for you if you ask for them WHEN you sign to have the repairs done. If you ask after the fact, they are not required to give them to you as they may have already been discarded. You can ask the shop to show you what was changed on the vehicle. Even if you don't know what you are looking at, fresh parts are clean and look new so they should be able to be seen fairly easily.

As to whether they were needed, you could have a second shop inspect the vehicle to see they also recommend the same services.
