Question: How do I locate source of and stop antifreeze from leaking onto driver side floor?

I have a 2001 Lincoln Town car that leaks antifreeze onto driver side floor board. I can't see where it's coming from and wonder should i try to fix myself. A guy from Lincoln said something about it coming from intake manifold and was pooling on top of transmission. He said it might cost anywhere from $900.00 to $1,200 to fix. Is this something for pro's only or can I roll up my sleeves and do it myself?

Your first step is to locate the leak. You can crawl under your car with a mirror and flashlight and try to see if it is pooling on top of the transmission. When there is an interior coolant leak, it is usually the heater core that is leaking, but because of the labor involved, you will want to know for sure where the leak is. A shop can pressurize the cooling system to force the coolant out during an inspection, and while you will have to pay for the diagnosis, it may be worth it if you can't find the leak yourself.

As to whether or not you can do the job yourself, you can get a manual or search online for the procedure ('01 town car how to replace heater core'). When you read through the procedure, you can decide if your skills are up to it. But when the labor time is high, it usually indicates a more complicated proceure, so it really depends on your skills and more importantly, patience.
