Question: How far to drive to reset computer for inspection

Hi, I just need to know how far I need to drive my 96 Audi A4 before I can have it inspected. Among other things, the garage had to replace the alternator and battery in the car and I need to drive it enough so it will pass inspection.

Are you talking about smog check readiness? It takes a drive cycle, but a few days of normal driving usually takes care of all the system checks.

Most good shops have computer equipment that can "force" readiness by running all the tests in about 20 min.

Thanks Tyler! I hate to sound ignorant, but it's whatever the emissions inspection covers in NYC. The garage my car is at says I need to drive it more because the computer hasn't registered enough miles to pass the inspection. Needless to say, I have no idea about these things and I don't know what to do. I've run out of time on my inspection sticker and need to get this handled asap.

does the "force readiness" advance the miles sufficiently for the computer to read it as passable for the inspection?

Forcing readiness doesn't change the millage. It activates the on board diagnostics to run all of their self checks.
