Question: How to diagnose a fuel pump and replace?

I was wondering if someone can point me into the right direction (or where to find the information) to run a diagnostic on my fuel pump? Also about how much (average) should a good and decent fuel pump cost and how easy/hard is it for someone to replace the fuel pump themselves, if need to be?
