I'm going to purchase a pre owned nissan maxima that recommends premium gas can I use regular

If it recommends Premium, that's really what you should use. If you don't, will still run and drive, but you may have issues with ignition pre-detination (Pinging) and/or state emission failures.

Check the owner's manual as it may say that the high grade fuel is recommended, but regular is fine. In that case, you can use whichever you like.
