Question: Importance of maintenance - mileage vs age of vehicle

Hi there.
I'm curious about the importance of following a maintenance schedule when comparing the mileage on the vehicle vs. it's age? I have a 2008 Kia Sportage that has only 11,500 miles on it. There are some pricey items that the dealership is telling me to replace such as the timing belt that they've said should be replaced after 4 years or 55,000 miles. Now I can understand after a car has been driven 55,000 why that would be necessary. However, after only 11,500 - it seems like the wear and tear on the vehicle can't really be compared to 55,000 so is it really necessary to make decisions about repairs based upon years?
I inherited this car from my father who was ill for a long time - which is why it was barely driven. I'm very grateful to have received this gift of his car but it's a bit over my head to cover these costs. So I'm new at all of this and really appreciate being able to post the question.
Thanks kindly for your help.

When a car gets old thing dry out. The timing belt is rubber. So it can dry out and start to crack. If the belt brakes you are looking at a major repair and a cost of over $3000. On the other hand you can have the timing belt inspected for signs of cracking or wear. I would also look into a independent shop to have the repairs done at. The dealer will cost the most to repair your car.

Car Brakes: How Do You Know When to Change Them?

By Zach Bowman For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
