Question: Is fuel injector cleaner necessary

use car once in a while. sits for 2 - 3 months between use

Try not to let it sit that long. It's bad for the seals, the gas will go bad etc.

Using a fuel system cleaner is fine, seafoam works great in the tank. Fuel stabilizer might be a good idea also if you can't use the vehicle more often.
