Question: Is it bad to manually shift an automatic transmission?

My Integra makes a lot of unnecessary shifts when city driving or doesn't shift when i would like it to so I have been shifting it on my own lately (1,2,D3,D4). I'm not redlining it or anything so is this bad for the transmission?
