Question: Is it best to have a mechanic with Subaru experience work on my car?
Recently I was told that my (manual) 1996 Subaru Impreza L 2.2, with over 200,000 miles on it, needs a timing belt. I'm the second owner and have owned the car for 14 years. I live in an area where Subarus are very scarce so not many mechanics are knowledgeable about them. However, for two years now I've had an independent mechanic work on it and he's kept it going. Someone told me that a Subaru timing belt has to be done "just right" and should be done by a mechanic with definite Subaru experience, like a dealership. A Subaru dealership did open in the area a few years go but it will cost much more money if they do the job. So, I would like to know if that is in fact true - is it worth spending more money to have a Subaru dealership change the timing belt rather than having an independent mechanic do it? thanks
