Question: Is the automotive industry worth entering?

I just got out of high school and I want to become an auto tech just like my brother in law but he says its horrible. Is it? How's the pay?

That is a good question. I not only work in the trade, but I also teach Automotive Technology in the evenings. This question comes up a lot.

All I can say is the trade has been very good to me. But it is a mechanical blue collar trade, so as you age, it gets a bit more difficult to get under cars every day.

I have worked in independent garages and dealers for many years, but now I work of a public agency fleet and love it. The private sector is profit oriented so there is a lot of pressure which is not true for public sector. I was about to leave the trade when the public agency job came up.

You brother in law is right. It is a tough trade to be in, but if you find the right place to work, it can be great. Pay ranges in my area for $18 to $40 an hour. And you should expect to buy a lot of tools and stay in school as long as you are in the trade as technology constantly is changing.

Whatever you choose, do something you like doing (you are going to be doing it a long time) and the money will come. I know many people who hate their job, but make a lot more money than me. But i think I am generally happier than them as I don't spend 8 hours a day doing something I hate. Good luck.

Car Brakes: How Do You Know When to Change Them?

By Zach Bowman For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
