Question: is the oil sending unit bad

I would take it back to the shop that did the work.

They may not have tightened the drain plug or double gasketed the oil filter (sometimes the old oil filter gasket sticks to the engine when the filter is removed, and if techs aren't careful to check and/or remove it, they install a new filter on top of it which results in two gaskets that may seal for a little while, but eventually fail)

the oil sender can fail and leak oil as well, but I would the recent worked check to make sure it is an unrelated issue.
