Question: Is this a main seal leak or oil pan?

Driving fine when oil light came on, hear engine knocking, oil gauge says empty..make it home, does not overheat on the way, check oil, none on stick, visible oil splatter around lower parts. Is this a main seal or an oil pan leak? Very sudden, had just checked oil a few days before and was only about 1/2 qt low...

I could not tell you which one it is with out looking at it. Go to the parts store and buy some UV leak detector. That will show you where it is coming from.
