Question: Is this an accurate estimate?

My car needs a front crank, cam seals, water pump and tensioner and idler pulleys. I received an estimate of $1350-$1400. Is there any way I could have this done cheaper, i.e. buy my own parts, look for a rebuilt engine. I really like my mechanic I just don't know enough about cars to know if this is fair.

Yes that is a fair price. If you buy your own parts the shop will not stand by them. If they buy the parts then they stand by there parts. You also wont save that much money. Going with a new engine will cost around $3000-$5000. So I would just fix the car.

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
