Question: Loses power

When going up a hill (varying degrees of angle), I have to push the pedal to the floor to get the car to go anywhere. It stays in the same gear, and just gets slower and slower, unless I shift to a lower gear manually. (The car is an automatic.) Then I can usually keep it going 50-55 mph, with the gas pedal still to the floor. The longer the hill, the temperature goes up steadily until the service engine soon light starts flashing. Once the car gets to the top of the hill, I can let off the gas pedal and the car changes gears correctly and the engine cools down.
