Question: loud fan like noise

after a few minutes of idle or slow start/stop driving the engine makes a loud fan like noise and is seemingly slow to shift gears

It's your fan cooling the engine.

this is much louder than just a fan, it has recently started and it happens during acceleration after i have been idling or driving in town. it usually stops after 1/4 mile or so. if it is the fan could it be the fan bearing going out or something like that. the vehicle does not seem to be running badly other than the loud noise.

Yes it could be the fan clutch. I would have a shop look at it or replace the fan clutch.
