Question: Low oil pressure and knocking

Today I was driving my vehicle when the low oil pressure light came on and the vehicle shut down. I put three quarts of oil in it and it started up but was knocking rather loudly.over the past one hundred miles, the length of the drive home, the car stalled two other times with low oil pressure. The engine is still knocking but runs smoothly otherwise. What am I looking at most likely?

You'll probably need to replace or rebuild the engine if it was operated with low oil pressure.
