Question: manual transmission, shifting linkage

I can shift into 1st, then 2nd but I have to hold the shifter. When I try to shift into 3rd there is nothing, same thing for 4th 5th and reverse.

Sounds like a problem with the linkage to the transmission or the transmission it self.
