Question: my 1994 van starts to have what feels like engine shake when accelerating at 30 to 40 mph

how do i know what this is

How can you tell it's an engine shake and not coming from the wheels? Most often vibrations that are specific to a narrow range of speeds are caused by tires (either needing to be rebalanced or replaced--a tire inspection will determine which).

If it is your engine, first inspect the motor/tranny mounts, then go after tune-up parts like spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor.
