Question: My brakes intermittently stop very suddenly with just a tap of my foot.

I've never had really any problems with my Honda because I get it serviced pretty frequently and try to take good care of it. But tomorrow I have to go and get 2-3 opinions on whether there is a problem with my brakes at all, and if there is, how much it will cost to fix.

Basically, this tends to be an intermittent problem and worse when going downhill. I will very lightly tap my brakes, and my car will stop so suddenly it was if I had hit something. They are extremely sensitive, and this problem produced itself practically overnight a couple of weeks ago. Any ideas or help would be highly appreciated, especially a general estimate on the cost of most brake repairs. Thanks!

Megan

Several things can cause brakes to grab, and it should show up pretty readily on inspection. You could have a sticking caliper, dust build-up, pad/rotor surface imperfections... You'll need to know the diagnosis to get a good estimate--and they you can use the 'repair cost calculator' link on this site to get an estimate. Although the shops that are doing the inspections should be able to give you a fair idea of the price.

Car Brakes: How Do You Know When to Change Them?

By Zach Bowman For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
