Question: My car will run in reverse but wont drive forward

I have no idea I was told it is most likely a transmission problem .... I was stopping at a red loud and my car lurched forward and made a loud bang. From then on the car would not drive so I had to push it up the road. I checked the transmission fluid and it was really low and a mechanic on the phone told me to add some more to see if it would help, as i thought it didnt.
